The fifteenth annual University of Alberta High School Model United Nations (HSMUN) Conference is an opportunity for high school students to assume the role of delegates in simulated high-level meetings of United Nations committees including the Security Council and the General Assembly. Students research their country’s foreign policy position ahead of time, and then work in mock multilateral committees of approximately 80 delegates to draft, deliberate, and vote upon United Nations resolutions seeking solutions to global problems. This year’s committees and topics can found under the Committees/Topic heading above. There is also the opportunity for students to instead assume the role of a reporter, whereby the student observes and records the committee proceedings, before writing articles published in HSMUN’s very own newspaper, “The Daily Delegate”.
The conference will be held on the main Edmonton campus of the University of Alberta in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) in the north-west section of campus. The venue for the Friday evening banquet will announced later this year. A map of campus can be found here.
The Conference will take place 23-25 February 2017. Opening ceremonies and registration will be held on the evening of Thursday, February 23rd, and committee sessions will take place over the following two days. A reception and dance will be held for all delegates on the evening of Friday the 24th. The plenary and closing sessions will take place on the afternoon of Saturday the 25th. A detailed schedule can be found here.
The cost for the conference is $70.00 per delegate.
We now offer fee subsidies for students who cannot afford to pay the full $70 fee. The application form can be found here, and should be emailed by the teacher or student to firstname.lastname@example.org at or before the time of delegate registration. We will respond with our decision as quickly as posssible.
Out-of-city schools are ultimately responsible for finding their own accommodations in Edmonton. However, we recommend contacting the Lister Conference Center for information. They can be reached by e-mail at email@example.com. However, we are willing to attempt to find students the opportunity to billet with community members. If you are interested, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
